Accelerating Visualisation in Virtual Colonoscopy
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents a novel method to accelerate volume ray casting as used in virtual colonoscopy. The method exploits a pre-processing visibility technique to identify the potentially visible portions of the colon. Then it applies a space leaping technique based on the projection of the visible boundary voxels of the colon onto the image plane. The method has been tested using a synthetic data set and an average speed up of five times have been observed compared to basic ray casting.

Colorectal neoplasm detection using virtual colonoscopy: a feasibility study.
BACKGROUND Virtual colonoscopy is a potentially powerful tool for non-invasive colorectal evaluation. In vitro studies have established its accuracy in simulated polyp detection but little data exist regarding its use in clinical practice. AIMS To evaluate the ability of virtual colonoscopy to detect colorectal cancers and polyps in patients with endoscopically proven colorectal neoplasms and...
متن کاملAccelerating Virtual Endoscopy
Applying volumetric ray tracing in interactive visualization has always been limited by low rendering speeds. This paper presents methods for accelerating first-hit ray tracing based virtual endoscopy with negligible impact on image quality, which aim at improving empty-space traversal (tracing all rays to the colon wall and storing the results in a depth buffer) and shading (surface normal app...
متن کاملFurther Acceleration of the Visualisation Process Used in Virtual Colonoscopy
We present a novel technique to accelerate the volume ray casting process used in virtual colonoscopy. Virtual colonoscopy is a less invasive alternative to colonoscopy with potential for wide use in the early detection of colorectal cancer. The idea of our method is to find the exact distance from each image plane pixel to the closest colon wall (boundary) voxel and use this distance informati...
متن کاملInteractive visualisation of a virtual colonoscopy by combining ray casting with an acceleration corridor
We present a novel acceleration technique for the volume ray casting process used in virtual colonoscopy. Our method exploits the information obtained from casting a ray to avoid redundant computations for neighbouring rays. A corridor from the image plane into the volume data set is examined whenever a ray is cast. All rays passing through this corridor reach the same cell as the first non-spa...
متن کاملVirtual vs. optical colonoscopy in symptomatic gastroenterology out-patients: the case for virtual imaging followed by targeted diagnostic or therapeutic colonoscopy.
AIM To compare virtual colonoscopy with optical colonoscopy findings in symptomatic patients. BACKGROUND Computer tomographic colonography is an alternative to optical colonoscopy. Studies have shown that two-dimensional computer tomographic colonography does not have sufficient sensitivity. Three-dimensional computerized tomographic virtual colonoscopy compares well with optical colonoscopy ...
